A BIG HAPPY 1st BIRTHDAY TO KAYDEN!

It feels like it’s come up fast. Maybe because Kayden is still a wee bub and looks more like a 6 month old than a one year old. Or maybe because my mind has separated hospital and home life and we haven’t been home a year.

I’ve actually been putting off even trying to write about his birthday because I know it’s going to flood me with emotions. Two tiny paragraphs in and I’m already crying.

I have to start with how incredibly grateful we are that we’ve made this milestone. Kayden has been such a fighter from the start and proven time and time again that he is a champion. He has a medical history longer than most adults and is the happiest little man. He is always smiling especially at his sister Sylvie and thinks his feet on his face is the funniest thing in the world.

But like the journey goes, it is a rollercoaster and to every high peak there is the drop.

He has been a baby for so long. Usually people say it’s the shortest phase and to soak it all in but I’m struggling to enjoy our extended baby time. Its hard to enjoy it when I worry about his future. I find myself impatient with his developmental milestones, always comparing and I know I shouldn’t. For my heart, I just need to know he will reach them and be ok.

We have been working with our team on lots of things like sitting and starting solids. He has a very relaxed temperament and it’s really hard to know if he simply doesn’t mind, we are falling behind or if it’s a flag to something greater. He does not fall

in the “every baby in their own time” theory, we have to actively work with Kayden. While I do feel the roughest part of the road is behind us, we have to look forward and there’s still a ways to go.

I also want to acknowledge and thank everyone who has supported us. We wouldn’t have made it here without our incredible medical team, family and friends. It really took the village.

It’s such a big milestone. It’s been a full on year, with up and downs and all the bumps and bruises. But we made it!

And I hope Kayden enjoyed his birthday. We went shopping, got a coffee, did a mini photoshoot, donated some goods and a long skin on skin shower.

Now we’re off to dinner.

Thank you TEAM KAYDEN!

And the happiest of birthdays to my miracle man, he is so strong and I can’t wait to tell him all he has achieved and how everyone supported him.

Xoxo
