Gains…Or lack thereof.

For the past 3 months or so Kaydens weight has been stagnant.

It’s been beyond frustrating. I had hoped we would be spending this time doing much needed catching up. But it seems we’re falling behind, it’s really upsetting. It’s seems like we’ve had a baby for forever, he’s 14 months and not even on the weight chart for his adjusted age now.

We got all the way up to 50% around Hospital discharge for his adjusted age. And since have plummeted to 2% and then we’ve dropped off. He is about the size of a 6-8 months old baby but he is 10 months adjusted and 14 months actual.

It’s starting to feel like it’s going to take us three years to catch up or maybe never.

We’ve tried high calorie milk twice now and he ends up projectile vomiting. We lose more than it’s worth. We’ve tried it so slowly, using only one bottle a day added to his regular formula but he isn’t tolerating it.

We’ve been working really hard at introducing food. He gags at purée and had many times vomited through dinner and all through his bowl and high chair. He was struggling with the coordination to bring the food to his mouth. It’s been very stressful and wasteful. We all sit there, Sylvie included making exaggerated faces and all sorts of yum um ah sounds to encourage him.

So I reached out again to our dietitian, we’ve gone through some strategies for meal times and best high fatty foods. I swear everytime I reach out, Kayden is listening. And he goes oh sorry, Mum I didn’t know this was stressing you out, I will work on it. Following our appointment, that week he started to show interest in food. Happily sitting at the table and reaching for foods and bringing them to mouth. He is still more tasting than properly consuming but he is happy there which makes dinner time much more peaceful for all of us.

We had our second RSV clinic that week and got a baby scale weight in. Unfortunately our home scale is super inaccurate so I get very excited when we get nudie rudie weight ins on proper baby scales. And he gained, a sarcastic whooping 160grams! The first movement in his weight in months. I was stoked, we are finally moving and the right way.

The RSV clinic is actually down the hallway form our dietitian so we popped down to see her and even get a visit from the Neurodevelopmental Therapist (NDT). It’s really helpful when appointments line up like this. Kaydens has so many follow ups here and there and with us both working and daycare it can be quite the run around. And financially not amusing as we pay for daycare if we don’t go and missing work makes it a double whammy for all these appointments.

Now that he is now over 1 year old there are more options available to him for weight gain. We have started a new milk mixed with his formula, pediasure and it’s loaded with all sorts and vitamins. Starting slow by adding one bottle of day into several formula bottles and so far tolerating it well. And he is more keen on food, he is starting to handle piece of food in his mouth better by either pushing them out or eating them whereas before he was choking and vomiting.

On Friday, we had a general paediatric follow up to go through it all and we got another weight in. He gained, again, stoked! 100 grams in 5 days, I’m hoping this is the start of a growth burst and we can keep tracking up the chart. Because we are back on the chart. Woohoo, it’s 4% but we are on the chart.

If your sending good vibes our way please make them weight gain growth vibes.
