Day 117 - 118
Kayden is a clever tiny dude and he has been smashing his wakeful feeds. 100% in the last 24 hours with a good weight gain and so….
WE ARE GOING HOME!
There we’re a few wee clues in the past two days but I wanted to keep it a surprise.
It was all a bit slow then sudden. They said it could be weeks but Kayden overheard and started smashing suck feeds.
We’ve been running around like crazy getting ready for him. Sorting his room, finding all the baby gear, lots of cleaning and laundry.
We will be going home with the NG tube, just in case. I did a practice on the dummy and then did one on Kayden with the nurse. Got it first shot easy peasy, I am very pleased with myself.
We will have plenty of care while at home. Although we haven’t met anyone yet, sounds like we have a homecare nurse who checks in on us. And we will need another eye test and blood test. We will be taking home iron supplements, vitamin A and Puria. And our baby!
We get to take our baby home.
It has been 118 days.
AKA
2832 hours
16.7 weeks
3.87 months
32.33% of the year
It’s a big deal.
I’m feeling so excited and anxious that my stomach has butterflies.
I went into hospital in the morning for some feeds and cuddles. The doctor is working hard to sort all our referrals and we will be ready in the afternoon. I head back home so Lee and I can go in together.
He took Sylvies car seat out so I can ride in the back with Kayden for his first regular car ride. He’s had two fancy ambulance rides but not yet been in the good ol family car.
It’s a pretty quick pick up. A few notes from the doctor, discharge papers and take home packs. We gave the nurses some fancy chocolates and gladly returned the swipe card. We said goodbye and of course I took loads of photos.
Kayden wasn’t so sure about the car seat at first, then he felt the movement and was all good. It was smooth ride home.
Lee has told Auntie Mel and Uncle Andy to come have burgers tonight. And we have told Grandparents Julie and Phil that we need some help getting a vanity downstairs, even though we finished renovating the bathroom last week, they don’t know that. My family is in Canada so no fun surprise tricks for them but lots of photos. Auntie Mel helped us with some staged photos much to Lees delight.
We are home.
I will forever be amazed by Kaydens journey.
He was born at 22.1 weeks 565 grams, we were told he wouldn’t make it. We were told they wouldn’t help because he wasn’t viable. Now we are going home 3.37kg with no respiratory support and no major surgeries.
He has proven to be the master of self healing. He has proven 22 weeks is viable, and is worth saving. He has defied all odds and impressed all the doctors.,
I am so happy we have made it out with our baby. Thank you to everyone who put positivity out there for Kayden, it made its way to us. Thank you all for your messages of kindness and support, you made us stronger.
With love and hope there are miracles.
