Fifty days

NICU 18

Day 50 - 56

Gestation 30 weeks

Day FIFTY! And this wee champion is on air.

That’s right air. There’s is no extra oxygen running through his cpap. He still requires the pressure and flow but air. That’s crazy for his gestation. Many babies go home around 40 weeks gestation with oxygen tanks.

Kaydens get his first eye test today. They’re checking for ROP

Retinopathy of prematurity (also called ROP) is an eye disease that affects many premature babies. A premature baby is one who is born too early, before 37 weeks of pregnancy. ROP happens when a baby's retinas don't fully develop.

The test is inconclusive, still to hazy and immature but they will use the results as a baseline for the next test. He will be tested again in a week.

He also got measured today and is 34 cm long (birth 30.5).

The next day and he is still in air. The doctors are very impressed. They will start adding half fortifier to the milk.

Weight gain 1110grams, we are back in the club to stay!

A nurse came into the ward to give COVID vaccines. I got mine while pumping by Kaydens bedside. My arm was a bit sore but that’s all.

He is needing a touch more oxygen around 25% and we have a few quiet days. Kayden reaches double his birth weight.

It always brings this scary feeling of what’s lurking?

Kayden is going to get his 5th blood transfusion but that’s not it. We’ve become used to these and he always looks so beautifully pink after.

Maybe his next eye test? We aren’t due anything else but I can’t shake this feeling like a dark cloud is following me.
