Our Little Miracle

NICU 30

Day 91 - 93

Gestation 36 weeks

Kayden is down to high flow 3L of air per minute. I’m not sure what happened to 4L, we didn’t see it, it happened overnight.

His feeds are still compressed but now down to 15 minutes, which is basically a slow bolus so likely will change over soon. I tried putting him twice on the breast and got nothing, fast asleep baby.

He has outgrown some of his tiny clothes so I’ve put them into the SCBU shared closet. Wild to think he has outgrown anything, he still seems so small.

The next day is Tuesday, I never know what day it is, only the days number for marking my frozen milk. Tuesday is currently my least favourite day because it’s eye test day. For me it’s one of the worst tests, anything eyes and teeth I find cringeworthy but I stuck around this time. He gets lots of eye drops and some sugar that works like baby Lilly drugs. Then his eyes are pried open with a gnarly metal device. I held his arms close to his chest and was talking to help keep him calm. It doesn’t work, he screams at the top of his lungs. It hurts my heart but we have to do these things. So we follow it up with a nice long cuddle.

The next day Kayden is 3 months old! I shared a few words on my personal Facebook page:

Kayden is 3 months old today.

He has never met his big sister.

He has never met his grandparents or aunties, uncles and cousins.

He has never met any friends or any of his amazing supporters.

He has never seen a dog and has no idea he has one.

He has never been carried around a room in someone’s arms.

He has never played with a toy.

He has never breathed fresh air.

He has never felt the sun.

He has never seen his home.

But he made it.

He is here despite all the odds against him.

He is a tiny fighter.

And one day, hopefully soon, he will come home.

He is our little miracle.
